It’s time for your Farm of the Future Report. I’m Tim Hammerich.

Farmers use a variety of tools to get the most productivity from their land every year. One problem is that some inputs can’t be mixed together to be applied at the same time. Vive Crop Protection is trying to change that, according to CEO Darren Anderson.

Anderson… “Growers are out and they're applying liquid fertilizer. So like a starter or if they're pretty fertigating through a pivot or something like that. One of the biggest challenges is that's a perfect time to be able to apply a crop protection product, a fungicide or an insecticide. One of the big challenges though, is making pesticides that can mix with those fertilizers is really, really hard because those fertilizers are incredibly salty. They're about 10 times saltier than the ocean. And so if you try to put most pesticides into a fertilizer, it just all shrivels up and you get cottage cheese in the tank, and it's just a nightmare.”

Anderson, a chemist by training, assembled a team at Vive to create products that help solve this problem.

Anderson… “So we've developed a whole suite of products, including an a nematicide, two fungicides and an insecticide that are all designed to be able to be applied with liquid starter and can be mixed with almost any liquid starter that's on the market. You know, with an in-furrow application or to be able to put it on through a pivot with a fertigation application.”

Anderson says the result is more effective pest and disease control, fewer passes across the field, and ultimately, better yields.
