GMO again. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. The exact definition of a genetically modified organism and what constitutes genetic engineering varies, with the most common being an organism altered in a way that "does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination".Let’s go back more than four years, July 2016. “The yeas are 306, the nays are 117. The motion is adopted.” Congress passes the GMO food labeling law mandating that foods with a significant amount of their content coming from genetically modified ingredients would have to be labeled as such. Kansas State University extension food safety expert Karen Blakesley told us what we'll be seeing on some food packages and may already be seeing. “A little green circle. Looks like a farm secene in the middle of it and it'll say bioengineered or derived from bioengineering.” Also, the foods with the GMO label must have….” a link or a phone number for people to call if they have questions.” Or a QR code that they can scan and get information, products with no GMOs will still be able to say so on the label. So will these labels cause food companies to stop using GMOs? Will consumers find the new labels a help or handicap, lots of questions? “We'll just have to wait and see how this all shakes out.”
