Wheat COVID Assistance

I’m Bob Larson. A Congressional group consisting of agricultural heavyweights is calling on the USDA, encouraging the inclusion of wheat growers in the next wave of coronavirus relief.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse is part of that group that he hopes will be able to make the case for wheat growers during these unprecedented times …

NEWHOUSE … “Absolutely! I’m joined in a couple of efforts there recently with my neighbor to the east, Kathy McMorris Rogers, as well as the former chair of the Ag Committee, Congressman Frank Lucas out of Oklahoma, joined an effort to provide direct payments to farmers who have suffered due to the pandemic in the wheat industry.”

Newhouse says wheat growers and every other producer in our state deserves a chance at survival …

NEWHOUSE … “We’re engaged in all of the critical commodities that we produce in this state and we want to make sure that our farmers get to the other side of this pandemic in as good a condition as possible so that they can continue to help feed the country and the world.”

Our growers, Newhouse says take on this task of feeding the world and can use a little help right now …

NEWHOUSE … “It’s a huge responsibility and an essential one and we want to make sure that we have a strong agricultural economy and industry on into the future.”

Newhouse says wheat farmers have experienced significant economic harm resulting, in part at least, from the COVID-19 pandemic. Washington state is the fourth largest wheat producer in the U.S.
