Georgia Peanut Harvest

Peanut harvest is getting started in Georgia. Here to provide a bit of an update on the important crop is Casey Cox. Casey is a 6th generation farmer who farms with her dad on the Flint River in Southwest Georgia. They grow sweet corn, field corn soybeans, pine trees, and of course, peanuts.

Cox…”Right now the peanut crop looks great in our area . We've had good conditions so far. It's obviously been pretty hot these last few weeks and a little bit dry. So this is a critical stage for peanuts. So we'll see if that impacts the crop. We had about six weeks of just constant heat last year, that really stressed them from what I saw, not, not necessarily our crop, just most just the crops in general. I know that there were a lot of stress with the peanut crop last year. So I'm hoping this year we've had slightly better conditions and won't have to worry about that as much. But the fields I've seen just in driving around our local area, they look really good. The irrigated of course, always share a little bit better than the non irrigated, especially this time of year. But so far, all the crops are looking really good.”

Cox, who is very passionate about soil and water conservation, says peanut harvest marks her favorite time of the year.
