Consumer Demand for Beef Continues to Rise

You’ve heard it before. There is no shortage of beef or meat products. Supply chain issues are ongoing however as meat packing plants struggle to get back up to speed following closures due to Covid-19 outbreaks.

Executive Director of the Colorado Beef Council Todd Inglee says his organization is working to help retailers and consumers get the most out of the beef products that are available.

Inglee: “Traditionally when retailers measure demand any, up or down, 1% or 2 % is normal when they compare week to week to the year prior. That first week we saw an 8% increase and then we saw things bump up to a 77% increase, the next year went up to 95% increase in demand and then it came back down to an average 38% increase between 36% and 38% and then last week it went up again when they started talking about a shortage

Retailers are having issues getting the products out of distribution centers to retail stores.

Inglee says retailers are adjusting by putting purchase limits on products for the time being. He says the Beef Council is watching consumer demands and concerns. It is putting information on its website www.cobeef.com to help consumers who don’t normally cook at home. And not just the usual cuts of beef but also information on cuts that home cooks may not typically buy.

The Beef Council also has a local beef directory at cobeef.com so consumers can buy directly from producers.
