Women in agriculture face the same challenges of economic uncertainty due to trade, weather, labor and markets as their male counterparts but, often they’re not as well connected to the assistance that’s available.

A program designed to focus on underserved women ag professionals is underway in Weld County.

Stacey Swanson is one of the class instructors (specializing in insurance for ag families) says the program focuses on five areas of risk as identified by the USDA. Those include: human resources, marketing, financial, legal and production.

The course is hours 18 of class time over six evenings. She says the presenters are mostly women. And that environment allows women to feel comfortable as they are learning.

Swanson says there is time set aside for questions, sharing, reacting and connecting with your presenters and fellow participants.

The networking is a side benefit that may benefit participants for years to come.

Annie’s Project has been around for 17 years. It started to honor Annie Kohlhagen Fleck by her daughter, a University of Illinois Extension educator.

The current program is underway while a new series of classes are being discussed for next fall.
