The effects of bovine respiratory disease can be tremendous. In fact, BRD is the top health and economic issue facing the beef industry today. Dr. Stephen Foulke, professional services veterinarian at Boehringer Ingelheim, shares advice on how to set your calves up for success with total health solutions. He says it’s important to get calves off to a strong start. “The best way to get calves off to a strong start, is actually going to start with colostrum. You want to make sure that they get adequate colostrum because this is going to bridge that gap from birth until the time that the calf’s immune system can take over and provide protection itself. When we talk about colostrum management, it’s not just about getting the colostrum from mom into baby, it’s also helping mom make the best colostrum to give to the baby in the first place.”

Early vaccination can help. Dr.. Foulke says early vaccinations protect calves when colostrum fades from the calf before its immune system is ready to protect the calf. Early vaccines can also reduce stress and enhance bovine respiratory disease protection.  To keep calves healthy,. He says, make a plan.
