The 2014 Farm Bill created the ARC AG Risk Coverage program and the PLC, price loss coverage farm safety net programs and under that bill, once you decided which program to go with, you were stuck with it for the life of the bill. So it's been basically five years since you got to make a real choice. But under this new farm bill, you've got from now until March 15th to make a new decision. Richard Fordyce runs the USDA’s Farm Service Agency and he says it takes a lot of analysis to make a right choice. But there is some online help for you.

“We partnered with Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois. They've developed a decision support calculator. And so farmers can use that decision support calculator by putting in their unique numbers. And it helps them make the decision based on market conditions and so on, whether to put a crop in the ARC County or put it into PLC.”… To find that tool and a couple of others go online, search ARC, PLC Decision Tools, ARC, PLC Decision Tools.
