International Students to Tour Livestock Industry in Northern CO
In early January as part of the International Livestock Forum, 20 university students — 10 from the United states and 10 coming from international universities —- will be participating in the Student Scholar Program. They will have the opportunity to tour animal livestock operations and facilities in Northern Colorado. Colorado State University head of the Animal Science Department Dr Kevin Pond shares more details.Pond: “This year’s tour will involve a tour to a major packing company. Where they get a behind the scenes. They get to see everything from incoming animals to packages of meat coming out the other side. So it is a great opportunity for students to see that on a large scale. They are also going to a feedlot to see a beef cattle feedlot and then spend time going by a lamb feed lot as well. They will go to an organic dairy where they are able to see a very modern dairy operation here in Northern Colorado. They will get exposed to several species. They top off their afternoon with a trip to a culinary area where they work on product development and actually get to do sampling of different products being developed. And see research and product development laboratory. So they go from the very beginning to the end product.”
Following their tour they will then participate the International Livestock Education Forum and then spend a day at the National Western Stock show.
