Ducks Downwind

Temperatures are beginning to drop and with the weather changing, migratory birds are on the move. As many of us know, there's a short window of opportunity when it comes to calling in ducks from a distance. Here's Champion Duck caller Buck Gardner to explain why sometimes utilizing a call that ducks can't replicate, will actually give you the upper hand on those distant ducks.

Buck "You're going to learn to do things with a duck call that a duck can't do. People say, why would you want to learn that? Well it's real simple, if a duck can't hear you to even look your way, they're going to fly right by and they never even see you. So you're going to make sounds louder and longer than a duck can actually make when they're at a distance great enough where they can't hear everything you say. That's where a hunting style hail call comes from, that's where your comeback call comes from, your actual breeding calls. A hunting call hail calls, it's almost like a count.. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11.. "Call" No, duck that has ever lived can do that. Some people say, why would you do that? Because when a duck is down wind maybe 200-300-400 yards away, and your sound will carry and they're flying by, you've got to get their attention and make them turn and look your way and see your decoy and make them come to it."
