I'm Susan Allen, Canola is a great rotation crop for wheat but there is a learning curve to growing it. Karen Sowers

Extension & Outreach Oilseeds Specialist at WSU helps to educate new canola farmers through her field days and workshops and says that growing canola will make you a better wheat farmer.

SOWERS: You can use all the equipment you use for wheat but you need to pay attention more. The growers that grow canola say that growing canola has made them a better wheat farmer. From start to finish you are out in the crop more you want to look at things, it's new so you start looking at things more.

Any other benefits?

The other thing that is an advantage to having canola is there is GMO, non-GMO, and there is the hydraulic NON GMO spring Canola that's in high demand a 3 cents premium . So lets say GMO is 20 cents, a penny and a half more for non-GMO and then a penny and a half on top of that for hydraulic Canola .

To have that whole sweep of opportunities of the market and then on the flip side you have multiple Canola varieties that can deal with residual herbicides coming through rotation, you are going to change chemistry. you are rotating your crops and your chemistry which is huge.
