On the last episode, matt was reminiscing about one of his favorite fall elk hunts during rifle season in late October snow up in north Idaho. The bulls were talking lot known as what some elk hunters call their second rut and bugling back and forth. I wanted to reach out to his hunting buddy RJ Oxford who shared this exciting moment with Matt and ask him why he thought the elk were being vocal that late in the hunting season. Here is RJ Oxford with his thoughts. RJ," Yeah, when we shot them bulls, that was right at the tail end when those cows got missed. The bulls were all bugling pretty good. In that situation when they put their herriom together the big bulls stick with them. Usually rag horns and smaller bulls will be the ones talking as they drift around looking for cows in heat. There is always a certain percentage of cows that get missed and end up in heat during the fall rut. You can locate bugle them, once the snow comes the bulls start getting together." Tom, " that's pretty cool RJ, I didn't know that bulls typically talk that late in the season. Next time you are hunting elk it might not hurt to bring along your bugle call. "
