Guiding Alaskan Brown Bear
One of our good friends Cory Stueve is gearing up for a month long excursion in Alaska. Guiding a hunt for one of the deadliest predators known to big game hunters, the Alaskan brown bear. The other day I was able to catch up with Cory and find out what it takes to be a guide on one of one of the most dangerous hunts in America.Cory "Ya, I leave next Wednesday morning out of Spokane, flying into Dillingham and then flying out on a bush plane west of Dillingham. I'll be guiding three separate hunts. I've guided up there a couple of times, a few years ago we guided some guys that had 'take down' recurve bows that they actually built themselves. "
I bet that can get pretty intense pretty quick huh?
"Ya, it can get that way."
So, where do these guys go to get set up for these hunts?
"These guys actually book for the outfitter in Alaska that I'm working for. When they need an extra hand guiding these hunts I just help them out. There's three separate ten day hunts, kind of scheduled back to back and maybe a couple days between each one. He also has a fishing bear lodge. It's a big fishing lodge he runs in the summer time. He'll fly us out in the bush and we'll be spike camping out of tents. A lot of spot and stalk."
To guide brown bear hunts, it takes wisdom, skill and some luck. We can't wait to hear some of these adrenaline filled hunting stories when you get back to the lower 48.
