Why Be Involved with Livestock Shows

Last week was the 81st Annual Jr Livestock Show of Spokane. I had the opportunity to watch both 4-H and FFA youth working hard, gaining life lessons as well as new skills. Quincy FFA chapter member and Secretary Blaine Lee had the reserve grand champion swine as well as being the reserve grand champion showman. I asked Lee what he and other livestock show participants gain from being involved
Lee: “It is the hard work and the responsibility of raising and showing livestock. There is a saying that I have that says, “Showing livestock isn’t a hobby, it is a way of life.” So if you are involved in any of the livestock shows — it’s a way of life. To put in that hard work and to get in that show ring and once you get that champion slap all that hard work pays off and its a one of a kind experience that you won’t forget.”
This was his last jr show of his career as he is a senior. I asked about his future plans and he is running for a Washington State FFA Officer position later this week at the Annual FFA Convention in Pullman. He continues with where he will attend college and shares his career goal.
Lee: “I plan on going to Modesto Jr. College in Modesto, California. I’m going there for two years to get my Swine Production certificate and then after that I will transfer to Chico State which is also in California and I want to become an ag teacher.”
For the many youth who participated in the recent flurry of jr livestock shows, congratulations on your achievements.
