Good food advocates cheered today as the U.S. Senate failed to reach a 60 vote threshold to proceed on Senator Roberts’ anti-GMO labeling bill. The Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act, introduced by Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) just weeks ago would put in place a weak, voluntary labeling system and would pre-empt states from enacting GMO labeling laws.

“Today’s vote marked an important milestone for the more than 90% of Americans who want GMOs to be labeled,” said Tom Colicchio, Food Policy Action co-founder and chef. “I am hopeful that the Senate will now work to craft a bipartisan mandatory on-pack GMO labeling bill that doesn’t demonize science and gives consumers the information they demand.”

Jen Haugen, Registered Dietician: “I come from the belief that the more you know, The more you can actually eat. I think education plays a huge role here and some of these buzz words, local, organic and things like that, while they are buzz words, we don't need to be fearful of those types of words. GMO's and words like that.”
