Former Idaho legislator Douglas Jones and I were talking about the whole GMO labeling situation when he brought up an interesting point. "The problem is and what is actually driving part of this is that Vermont has a mandatory labeling law that will go into effect July 1. If you are a major food company, this is the middle of March and if you think you're going to have all your packages or boxes labeled by 1 July, you better be planning what the label is, getting them printed, getting them onto the box or the can in the next month or two so that they can be on the shelf when the law goes into effect. The problem is with state individual labeling laws because no two would ever read the same and if you are a nationwide food manufacturer, that's a problem because to try and comply with 50 different laws is the challenge. A single, uniform national law is doable. Dealing with 50 different state laws would just be chaos.
