Supporting Women In Ag

Supporting Women In Ag. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

There has been a lot of attention this week on International Women's Day which was Tuesday. Event's and celebrations took place all over the world to highlight that women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievement and that holds true for women in the ag industry. Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee Chair Sherry Saylor says women are the most trusted representatives of agriculture when it comes to talking about food with millennial moms.

SAYLOR: So I think that's one of the reasons we have to be telling our story. Obviously also we're full partners in the farms with our families. This is our lifeblood, our livelihood, what we actually believe in and so we have a responsibility to tell our story.

Throughout the year Farm Bureau provides opportunities for women to become better advocates for agriculture and connect with consumers.

SAYLOR: There's so many ways like ag in the classroom is a great way to get involved because everyone can go into a classroom and read about farming with some of our ag accurate books from the Foundation. We also have Communications Bootcamp coming up that any woman in America is welcome to apply to where we teach women to go out and be advocates.

She says Farm Bureau provides training for women who would like to get more involved in agriculture.

SAYLOR: Whether you choose to do a blog or you choose to go in and do it as a group event, we have something called Our Food Link in Farm Bureau which we put out a lot of different opportunities for women to be involved in their local community. Maybe they could advocate at their state house.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
