Ag Safety Week

Ag Safety Week

Ag Safety Week. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Many years ago when I began my working life, my first job was as a farm hand but before I could take the job I had to go through a day long farm safety course. I was reminded of this when I saw that this week is Agricultural Safety Awareness Program Week. It's in its 8th year and American Farm Bureau director of program development Marty Tatman says safety is especially important as planting season approaches.

Tatman: The Ag Safety Awareness Program Week is a week that we, from an American Farm Bureau standpoint, really just want to make sure that we remind all of our farmers and ranchers and everybody involved in agriculture that safety is important as they head out to the fields for planting season.

Ag Safety Week will highlight a different safety focus each day and provide additional best practice resources, as well as real life stories.

Tatman: Our five areas are ATV safety, child safety on the farm, tractor safety, roadway safety and grain bin safety.

Tatman says ag safety includes everyone who might be on the farm, including farm workers, children and visitors.

Tatman: Whether it's the actual farmers going into the fields or families coming out to visit the farmers and ranchers it's important that we always keep in mind that safety should be our number one priority.

There are a number of great online resources for ag safety information including the AFBF website.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
