More on Preparing for Breeding Season

This week we continue our conversation with Performix Nutrition Systems Animal Nutritional Consultant Dr. Boone Carter about considering your cows' nutritional needs now prior to breeding season — he says there are additional things to consider as well

Carter: "One of the critical things that people need to keep in mind is that animal handling is pretty critical for breeding performance. If your animals are handled and stressed in any way, then their performance is not going to be as good and they won't breed as well. So if you are doing an timed AI program or any program like that how you manage those cattle in the chutes — not using hot shots — handling cattle quietly makes a big difference in the reproductive outcome. That is one critical factor that we need to keep in mind. The other critical factor we need to keep in mind is that the reproductive function at breeding season is really a function of how the cattle were treated 60 days prior to that and that includes bulls as well."
