Colorado Grain Stocks and Crop Summary

Colorado Grain Stocks and Crop Summary

Last week the USDA released their Crop Summary and Grain Stocks Reports. Here is NASS Mountain Region Director Bill Meyer with Colorado statistics from the Crop Summary report.
Meyer: “For colorado the corn for grain was estimated at 134.9 million bushels— that is 9 percent below last year’s production. The average yield was estimated 142 bushels per acre which was 4 bushels per acre below the yield last year. It is not surprising but interesting that our sorghum for grain production was estimated at 22 million bushels up 162 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 55 bushels per acre which was up 25 bushels from last year but we also harvested a lot more acres at 400,000 compared to 120,000 last year.”
Meyer continues with winter wheat numbers.
Meyer: “As a recap, our winter wheat production was estimated at 79.18 million bushels, down 11 percent from last year. Our winter wheat yield was estimated at 37 bushels per acre which was down 1 from last year. A little bit of a surprise for the U.S. — we also asked about winter wheat seedings for next year. In Colorado, we’re estimating 2.25 million acres, down 6 percent from last year. At the U.S. level they are expecting 36.6 million acres which is down 7 percent from last year. That is definitely below what the trade expected — that was a surprise nationwide.”
