Closing Dates Coming Up

Closing Dates Coming Up. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

It's getting to be that time of year again when we start thinking about the upcoming planting year and Jo Lynne Seufer, Risk Management Specialist for USDA/Risk Management Agency reminds producers that the final date to apply for certain coverages is coming up.

SEUFER: Our spring planted crops is March 15th and we have a lot of strong participating in our spring crops particularly maybe our onions in Washington State. We currently, for 2014, we insured about 89% of the acreage in Washington State and our processing beans was about 94% and our sugar beets participation for our individual policies was about 81%

She says the self closing date for spring planted onions is Feb.1 which is different from the others.

SEUFER: Contact their insurance agent and find out any details or changes that may be best fit their needs for the 2016 crop year. And then we have the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection policy which is another popular policy in Washington State. We have several policy holders and March 15th is also the self closing date for that.

Why are these programs so popular?

SEUFER: The individual policies are meeting the needs of those growers and then the Whole-Farm policy is meeting those diversified growers on the revenue side so they have a policy to protect maybe their yield and then they have a policy to protect that downside price risk.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
