Citrus Moving & Curbing Deer Populations

Citrus Moving & Curbing Deer Populations. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

California's largest citrus producing county is once again shipping off navel oranges to China. Tulare County, which is in California's Central Valley,  had been barred from the Chinese market over some concerns about the quality of the fruit. The Chinese government had insisted that growers take extra steps to ensure that the citrus arrived on their shores free of any problems. The president of California Citrus Mutual, Joel Nelsen says the industry got an unexpected break from China to start shipments again.

NELSEN: Fruit is moving in that regard. The industry is taking some major mitigation steps to satisfy their demands upon arrival and again the early arrivals have been met satisfactorily so we're hoping for the season, the next six weeks into China will be extremely positive as well.Tulare Country is open for business for export. At least initially we're looking at some positive weekly movement throughout the country and throughout the marketplace quite frankly.

Northern Idaho has a problem my deer. A problem with deer and their growing populations. The solution is contraception. Contraceptive vaccines that is. The vaccines are distributed via a dart gun and will sterilize the deer for up to two years. There has not been any decline in the numbers of deer even after a ban on the feeding of deer put into place a year ago. Residents of Dalton Gardens, north of Couer d'Alene have been dealing with the headaches of growing deer populations for years and the new incoming mayor says they will discuss contraceptive measures for the next year.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
