Buy An Apple, Help A Student. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Earlier in the fall I reported on the USApple Associations "Apples for Education" media contest to help support student projects across the nation. The campaign asked people to snap a picture of themselves eating an apple and post it on social media. Wendy Brannen, Director of Consumer Health and Public Relations says the results are in and the top five project recipients include Sherwood Forest Elementary in Federal Way.

BRANNEN: I talked to that teacher this week, Ryan Westoff, and Ryan was just telling me a little bit about his kid circumstances and he sees kids that are coming to school everyday and they don't necessarily have a lunch with them or a snack with them so his idea is to do an apple a day. He is actually going to use the funding to go to the grocery store and buy apples and put a basket of apples out in front of the school office.

They will share in a portion of a $20-thousand dollar pot. All twelve of the student programs in addition to the top five will also receive some funding.

BRANNEN: We had 20-thousand vote submissions so that's 20-thousand pictures of people eating apples and our sponsor products that were submitted which you know to get someone to take time out of their da, that's a commitment from those individuals who participated.

Co-sponsors in the program included Marzetti, KIND Healthy Snacks, Roth Cheese and Johnsonville Sausage.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
