US Beef Export Value Opportunities

US Beef Export Value Opportunities

On Friday at the Oregon Cattlemen’s Convention in Bend, U.S. Meat Export Federation’s Senior Vice President of Marketing Dan Halstrom gave an update of U.S. beef exports and said there is continued value opportunities in the export markets.
Halstrom: “Last year we averaged about $300 a head contribution which was an all-time record for exports — we are running a slightly behind that this year at $280 but never the less two very good years on the export side. I think that was despite some headwinds — the last year — year and a half we have been under intense competition with Australia in particular in the Asian markets. Part of it is that they have a about a 10 percent duty advantage over us because they have a bi-lateral agreement between Australia and Japan. We’re coming in at about a 38.5 percent duty and Australia is coming in at about 29 or 30 percent duty as a result of that agreement. That is a headwind but TPP — once we are able to hopefully get that administered. At the point that it becomes effective — we are on par with Australia immediately. So I also heighten from our point of view the TPP is a very vital piece of legislation to remain competitive — not only with Australia — but the rest of the year.”
He added that hopefully in for the first half of 2016 there will be some progress made in China for U.S. beef exports.
