U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance recently held a conference call with media to discuss an announcement by Subway regarding their refusal to use animal products that had received antibiotics. Listen for a second to the narrator: “The Subway chain and franchises has announced that they intend to eliminate sourcing proteins from animals that are given antibiotics. This is even when the animals become sick. I am sure everyone on the line is tracking much of the initial reactions by farmers and agribusiness advocates who are expressing disappointment and frustration with this decision which has tremendous potential impact for farmers who have the critical need to protect their animals from disease. This along with the confusion that Subway’s message sends to consumers about how farmers and ranchers take special care in the welfare of their animals.”

The call featured Thomas Titus, a swine and crop farmer from Elkhart, Illinois. Titus discussed his concerns and the potential impact on farmers and ranchers nationwide with this recent Subway announcement which confirmed that it will begin to transition to serving only protein from animals that have never received antibiotics.
