The US Meat Export Federation recently hosted a beef trade mission which started in Seoul, South Korea, and ended in Tokyo, Japan. Colorado Beef Council Member Luke Larson was on that trip and he says there are good opportunities for the US to market beef to Asian consumers.

“We've had the opportunity to visit the locations and see how they're marketing beef one of the exciting developments in Seoul and the South Korea office. One of their focuses is on institutional sales of beef. So there's a lot of the big businesses have cafeterias and move a lot of product through those institutions. And it's kind of an afterthought and for a lot of people but the opportunity for beef in Asia through institutional markets is really exciting.”

Larson says that having in-person connections and having an organization like us MAF is key to increasing exports of US beef and providing a market for lesser-use cuts.

“I think one thing I've learned being on the trip is the importance of staying out there is competition Australia being a main competitor and and now that we have these markets built up, we not only want to continue to grow them but we need to be present and constantly defending our markets.

Larson points out that South Korea is the largest export market for US beef.”
