Yakima Valley Wine Accolades

Yakima Valley Wine Accolades. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Three wine grape growers were recently part of a list of The 20 Most Admired Grapegrowers in North America. Barbara Glover with Wine Yakima Valley says the listing in the Nov/Dec 2015 issue of Vineyard and Winery Management is a big thing for Washington wine industry.

GLOVER: It is pretty cool. There were three names from Washington State and all three hail from the Yakima Valley in addition to an honorable mention. The wine growers that were noted were Dick Boushey of Boushey Vineyard, Mike Sauer of Red Willow Vineyard and Jim Holmes of Ciel Du Chuval Vineyard.

Todd Newhouse of Upland Vineyard received an honorable mention.

GLOVER: The Yakima Valley as an AVA encompasses this entire area of which all three of these growers reside. And then we have sub-AVA's within the Yakima Valley AVA. So as many micro-climates, they're all exceptional as noted by this accolade.

The Yakima Valley Appellation grows over 30% of the state's vineyard acreage.

GLOVER: People are more interested in where their food comes from and that's translating into the wine as well. People are really interested in who's growing the grapes. As any winemaker will tell you, great wine comes from exceptional grapes and if you don't have the good grapes to start with it's really hard to make good wines so it really is where everything starts.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
