Catch The Crush

Catch The Crush

Catch The Crush. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

As the weather cools and we have more of a fall feel in the air it's time to think about wine crush. The wine grape harvest like everything this year began a couple weeks early and according to Barbara Glover, Executive Director for Wine Yakima this years crush events are being planned.

GLOVER: Crush is really the activity of making wine. The growers are growing the grapes, harvest their grapes and then they bring them into the winery and the wineries start to crush the grapes. They are getting the juice out, they're letting the fermentation start. They're the beginning stages of making wine. For Yakima Valley during Catch the Crush weekend visitors can come in and they can actually see that process.

Glover says with crush you can really learn about the wine making process.

GLOVER: It's a great educational opportunity. People have a chance to taste the grapes, the ripe grapes, the grapes that are being processed into wine and at the same time they can taste the finished product and really see what the difference is.

She talks about what to expect during crush weekend.

GLOVER: We've got a couple of grape stomps. People get a chance to roll up their pants and stomp some grapes and see what that process is all about. The event weekend is October 10th & 11th. It's in the Yakima Valley which is the entire AVA so from Yakima all the way down through Red Mountain. We've got 40 plus wineries participating.
