Bottling Marinade A lot of ranchers look for different ways to increase ranch income. I'm Jeff Keane. In one minute, I'll tell you about a new idea I just read about. Most ranches wanting to develop more income resources for their ranches look to areas such as forming hunting clubs, adding guest facilities or maybe even day rides and cattle round-up experiences. But George and Cathy Sandberg have started marketing a marinade they have used for over 20 years. The Roseburg, Oregon couple was given the recipe by Wally and Pat Dinsmore, also livestock producers. George adjusted the original mix just a bit and has been using the marinade ever since on wild game, lamb and beef cuts. Everywhere the Sandberg's used the recipe there were always questions about the marinade and then the same statement "you should bottle it." So when two Oregon outlets, New Seasons Markets of Portland and Kruse's Farm Market of Roseburg actually committed to selling the product, the Sandbergs decided to give it a try. So with help from Food Innovation Center in Portland and Wilhelm Foods of Newberg, Oregon, George and Cathy developed a business plan and got the recipe produced and bottled. The marinate is sold under the name of Oregon's 51 Brand Marinade. "51" is the livestock brand that has been in Cathy's family for over 75 years. I hope the Sandbergs do well in their new venture and maybe you should dust off some favorite food preparation recipes, but I'm not letting my mother or mother-in-law market any of theirs I don't share well when it comes to food. I'm Jeff Keane. Capital Press 7/15/05
