Utilizing Resources. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Dr. Desmond Layne, Endowed Chair of WSU's Tree Fruit Extensions program recently spoke with members of the tree fruit industry about making sure that you were aware of an using all the resources available for your operation. He says to make sure you consider the source of information.

LAYNE: I wanted to first speak about sources of information that come from academia and government and as we think about the land-grant system of universities, we consider ourselves, at least, the unbiased source of research information. So we're not selling a product. We're doing peer reviewed research. We're trying to provide really the best information for you as our constituents from the research that we do.

He says that USDA fits into that category as well but when it comes to commercial information:

LAYNE: I'm not disparaging of commercial sources of information but they do have a product or a service to sell and that can bias the information that they present to you. You can get information from the public. There are sources like Wikipedia that you all use for all kinds of things. You can do searches on Google and find information. It may or may not be reliable. That's why considering the source is important. Your peers are a great source of information. Some of you have developed levels of expertise in different things because you have a strong interest in it and you can be a great source of information to your peers and they can be likewise.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
