Agribusiness Update for Wednesday 05/06/14

The documentary film Farmland is now in select theaters across the nation. The film follows six young farmers as they share their stories about agriculture. Award-winning filmmaker James Moll hopes urban audiences can learn from the film as much as he did while filming. Moll grew up in a city and never had been on a farm - but he says if people can come away from the film feeling as if they have stepped onto a farm - he can feel really good about it. Nebraska farmer David Loberg is one of those featured in the film - and he said audiences can see the human beings behind what they see in the grocery store through the film. He urges everyone - supporters and critics of agriculture - to see the film.
USDA and the Department of Interior have announced farmers, ranchers and landowners implementing Farm Service Agency Conservation Reserve Program practices to protect and increase lesser prairie-chicken populations won’t be subject to additional regulations since the species is listed under the Endangered Species Act. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA’s partnership with individuals in voluntary initiatives - like CRP - are important and yield real results - so this announcement allows producers to remain engaged in responsible conservation plans.
