Oil Wars

According to the Associated Press, a study shows biofuels made from the leftovers of harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline for global warming in the short term. This conflicts with the Obama administration's conclusions that they are a much cleaner oil alternative and will help combat climate change. A $500,000 study paid for by the federal government and released in the journal Nature Climate Change concludes that biofuels made with corn residue release 7 percent more greenhouse gases in the early years compared with conventional gasoline. Then I see this. The Fuels America coalition - a broad-based coalition of renewable fuels producers, agriculture groups and others - has launched a television and digital advertising campaign - along with a website - Oil Rigged dot com (www.oilrigged.com). The goal of this campaign is to blow the whistle on how the oil industry is trying to rig the system in its favor in the debate surrounding the Renewable Fuel Standard. And I hear this from Renewable Fuel Standard - Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis: Growth Energy hopes EPA and Congress will get the message that the system is rigged overwhelmingly in favor of the oil industry. All the renewable fuels industry is asking for is a fair chance and market access so consumers can have a choice at the pump. He says they certainly shouldn’t be going out of their way to rig the system even further.”
