FSIS Flap & Rising Dairy Production

FSIS Flap & Rising Dairy Production

FSIS Flap & Rising Dairy Production plus Creating a Farm Experience. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Milk prices seem to be increasing even though the latest USDA milk report shows increased output. Higher demand for exports seems to be the reason for the increase. USDA Outlook Board Chairman Gerry Bange.

BANGE: We've got the Class 3 price up 55 cents to 19.25. We've got the Class 4 price up to 12.70 and we've got the all milk price up to 21.70. That's an increase of 50 cents and an increase of just about 8 1/2% from the 20.01 that was reported for the all milk price in 2013.

A recent New York Times article claimed that job vacancies in the Food Safety and Inspection Service have led to more food recalls. But the FSIS is firing back and says that that is just not true and that FSIS is legally required to have a sufficient number of inspectors present in every single meat and poultry plant in the country. According to the FSIS, the New York Times article was based on misleading and inaccurate information, and to the paper's credit it ultimately ran at least a partial correction.

Bringing the farm experience to schools and school-aged children is one way to introduce them to a possible career in agriculture. Rod Bain has the story.
