Idaho Cattle Feeder Takes the Reins of the Federation of State Beef Councils

Earlier this week, I shared that Idaho rancher Kim Brackett had been elected to serve as the Chair of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board. Well another Idaho native is at the helm of the Federation of State Beef Councils, Cevin Jones from Eden. Jones grew up on a family feedlot and farming operation and is a graduate of Boise State University. He has been involved with and dedicated to the beef industry his entire life and operates Intermountain Beef, a full-service, custom feedlot.I asked Cevin about his priorities as the new Chair. He shares that there is a need to consider enhancing the current beef checkoff program.

Jones: “With the declining cattle numbers and drought and those kind of things, we’ve had a real squeeze on the amount of dollars that we have available at the national level to do promotion and research with. So I think that has been the continuing theme for the last four or five years, is that we see a continued decline in dollars. That would be one of the areas that would be a big focus of mine.”

I think that having two Pacific Northwest beef industry representatives serving at the same time as two national chairmen reflects very positively on our region’s leadership caliber. Jones says that he is not aware of two people from the same state to chair these two organizations as that the same time.

Jones: “It has made a great working relationship. Her and I obviously have a good relationship and very open and we are able to communicate. It will definitely be fun to work with Kim Brackett and moving forward Checkoff agendas.”
