Farm To School

Farm To School

I'm KayDee Gilkey and welcome to Open Range. Here's Greg with today's report.

Thanks KayDee. Cattle producers are teaming up with teachers in Oregon to help educate kids about where their food comes from with a farm to school program. Keith Nantz with Dillon Land & Cattle Co. explains.

NANTZ: I think it's pretty vital with our industry today just the disconnect between where food comes from and where to get it and all those kinds of things. I think it's a great opportunity to educate them a little about the fundamentals of where things come from.

In today's society that is one of the biggest issues. Nantz describes the event going on today.

NANTZ: We're going to do a kick-off assembly down at Yamhill Carlton Intermediate school. I'm going to introduce myself as a rancher and what I do and how I do it and go about things. The Cattle Women of Oregon will come in as well - do a full barbecue and stuff for them at the school and we'll have little breakout sessions for to actually come and be hands on with some ropes and some halters and some stuff about the horses and some of the tools and stuff we use with the cows.

This event was made possible the passing of HB 2649 which directed $500,000 to the Oregon Farm to School Grant Program.

NANTZ: This is just a key, in my opinion, to start educating the public a little bit more about where things come from and what sustains our economy.

I'm Greg Martin and that's today's AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don't forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I'm KayDee Gilkey.
