12-16 IAN GMO Fears

Why the rejection already?

After China rejected a huge shipment of GMO corn from the United States, I called Travis Jones of the Idaho Grain Producers Association to ask why they were afraid: "The question is, if we have accepted genetically engineered products in our country, what is the hesitation on the part of the Asian markets? Do they know something we don't know? I think the Asian markets have to listen to their consumers and they have listened and their consumers are telling them that they want to be careful and cautious about anything that is genetically modified and it is up to the United States and our partnerships with some of the other global allies to make sure that the science is done correctly and that it is clear and that consumers and the importers over in our Asian marketplaces know that these products are safe and that the science proves it and there are protocols that are in place that are acceptable to test any of these shipments that we may ship over to those countries. In this case in China, it looks like it is just a specific type of corn that they did not have on their list and it does sound like they have other GMO crops that they do import. This may just be an isolated incident.
