Bryn Johnstone has been a cattle woman for 13 years. She is married to Chris...a Jordan Valley cattleman and tells the story of her first branding which involves, in part, the branding, vaccination and castration of the male calves before turn out to summer pasture. She uses a term for a male part of the anatomy which is pretty blunt so you’ll hear a “beep”, but she is referring to Rocky Mountain oysters which she says she likes. “I’m moved here from the city when I met Chris so the 1st branding was a new experience for me and I had never seen anything like it before. After the 1st steer they cut they had go and put the “beep” on the fire and get the new girl to try them out and I have loved them ever since. It worked out all right. And 13 years later, you are running the needle. That’s right. I actually started the 2nd branding. Chris decided to show me how to run the guns and so I have been doing it ever since for ours and I do the vaccinating for all of our friends. That is important to the health of the animal. It is important that you put it in the right place and you are not wasting the vaccine. It is the most expensive part of the cattle business. It you don’t put it in the right place it can ruin in the cut of the meat.
