Beginning Farmer/Rancher

Beginning Farmer/Rancher

I’m KayDee Gilkey and welcome to Open Range. Here’s Greg with today’s report. I’m Greg Martin with the AgriBeef Minute. Follow your passion. Three words that can lead to satisfaction in your life and job. Rancher Tommy Allen says as a young rancher following his passion has led to a successful side career. ALLEN: I’ve always had a passion to try and dabble in the cattle industry but like many others didn’t grow up on a big ranch, didn’t have land in the family, don’t have cattle. But I’ve always had a passion. It kind of started out with my grandpa. He stumbled across some land that seemed a good place to start. ALLEN: I kind of did my research and this was over last winter and put some numbers down and basically I run everything on a spreadsheet. And I found a program with AgriBeef that works out great. It’s a tremendous program. What I’m doing is running yearlings. I’m buying them at a certain weight and I’m running them for 5 to 6 months depending on the feed and then I’m selling them so I’m not having to out there and feed cows all winter. Allen has a mentor through AgriBeef and then since he didn’t have a lot of capital, he used the USDA Young Farmer program. ALLEN: I figured how am I going to get a loan to buy 40 head of cattle. Well they have a program out there that the FSA will give you a loan at 1% interest if you qualify. And you can apply for this loan for a few years until you can get established and get your feet on the ground to start out and maybe try and live off this or supplement another income off this. I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute. Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef.
