05/18/05 Cabernet franc

Welcome to Vine to Wine, this is your host Linda Moran, and today we are going to explore Cabernet Franc. This is a grape that I have discussed in the past but still get questions about. Cabernet Franc is a well known blending grape in the Loire Valley of France. There it will contribute distinct herbal notes and bright acidity to a wine. Here in North America, if it is a stand alone varietal wine, or the major contributor to the blend, it is usually meant for consumption in the short term rather than long time aging. The majority of the Cabernet Franc that I have tasted is medium bodied with ripe fruit characters and soft tannins. Because most large producers do not make a wine that features Cabernet Franc on its own, you will probably have the best success finding it from smaller boutique producers. Do a search on the internet and look for reviews of wines from all parts of the U.S. and Canada. There are also some excellent Rose wines being made from Cabernet Franc and with the summer upon us investing in a few ofthose would be a treat for you and any guests that might happen by. Although the label mayread Cabernet France remember that there may be other grape varietals in much smallerpercentages that greatly impact the finished product. Try lots of Cabernet Franc from many different places and producers and enjoy your exploration into this wonderful vinifera grape. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joiningme on today's Vine to Wine.
