Executive director of the Idaho Wool Growers Association, Stan Boyd recently talked with me about foreign sheep herders who come into this country with a job waiting for them, start work and then abandon the sheep herds in the middle of the night. “They suffer a lot of loss and a lot of hardship. We are just asking these men who signed a contract and the wool grower pays their way in, a lot of those illegal immigrants start off in Central America, hitchhike and bus all the way to the Mexican border, get robbed, sexually molested, hire a coyote to sneak them across, some of them die of thirst going across the desert, Hell, we fly them in, they are in Peru and 16 hours later they’re in the Boise airport. We fly them in and a their way just to have them jump and become illegal immigrants, it’s not fair. In the paper it mentioned something about they get better paying jobs in a nursery or gardening, what is the going wage for a sheep herder? It is set by the department of labor. We don’t just hire these guys and everybody has their own wage. It is set by the federal government. Different states have different wages. All of their expenses are paid for. These guys in Idaho our making $1000 a month and most of them send every penny that to their families.
