More On Grass Tetany

Welcome to Open Range, I’m KayDee Gilkey. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. We recently spoke to Dr. Mike Mehrens with Performix Nutrition Systems about a problem for cattle called grass tetany where nursing cattle fail to get enough minerals.

MEHRENS: Often she doesn’t have enough calcium and magnesium and salt in her diet to stand that huge change in her metabolism with having the baby and now nursing the baby.

And Mehrens says it’s important for producers to keep an eye on their cattle at this point.

MEHRENS: Before calving, if you have a history on your ranch of grass tetany or if it’s a new place to you you might ask the neighbors because if you see it once there is a pretty high probability that you will see it again. So you change your supplement to one that has added calcium, magnesium and salt to help her overcome those changes.

Of course Performix Nutrition Systems offers high mag mineral products.

MEHRENS: Usually a granular mineral. It can be with a liquid supplement. It can be with a block kind of supplement are the three most widely used forms of mineral.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m KayDee Gilkey.
