More On Cherry-Plum Hybrid

More On Cherry-Plum. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

On my last report I introduced you to a new fruit product coming out. It’s a cherry-plum hybrid that has very unique and delightful taste but due to the newness may not be available in the U.S. for some time. But what is it called. Alan Taylor with Brandt’s Fruit Trees says that’s where it gets confusing.

TAYLOR: The variety name is Nadia. Apparently the plant breeder that put this together, his daughter’s name is Nadia so the variety name is Nadia and we cannot use as a marketable name in terms of trademark so we’ll be changing the name from Nadia to something else hopefully as attractive as that because everybody likes that name.

If you are interested in trying to grow and produce this new hybrid you will need to see the folks at Brandt’s.

TAYLOR: This business is so complex. It’s part of our international group which is the Associated International Group of Nurseries, AIGN and part of the story here was that we’re forming a partnership with a company called UNIVEG which is just humongous. They’re a worldwide produce supplier. The real thing for us here is that Brandt’s Fruit Trees is the owner in North America.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
