Vilsack Shares Some Startling Statistics
I’m KayDee Gilkey with today’s Northwest Farm and Ranch Report.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack addressed participants of the Commodity Classic last week. He shared that he had been a meeting at the White House with all of the CEOs of most of the United States ag biotech companies. He learned some interesting facts he shared with his audience.

Vilsack: “One of the most startling statistics that was shared during that meeting was the fact that last year when we faced the worst drought we’ve seen since the 1930s. A drought that impacted and affected virtually every area of our great country that we still had the fifth largest corn crop in the history of America. That is an extraordinary statistic and it speaks to the capacity of American Agriculture to embrace technology to be more productive. And you all know and appreciate that fact that technology has to continue to be embraced if we are to face an enormous challenge over the course of the next several decades. To increase the world’s food population by 70 percent will require us to produce as much food in that thirty to forty year period by 2050 than we have produced in essence in the last 10,000 years. This is an enormous challenge for us.”
