Pacific Northwest Rancher Reports on Cattle Industry Convention

I’m KayDee Gilkey with today’s Open Range.

Last week marked the Cattle Industry Annual Convention and NCBA Trade Show Cattle which happened in Tampa, Florida. If you are like me, you were wishing you could have been there. So I did the next best thing and caught up with Pacific Northwest rancher Sam Kayser who attended the Convention for the first time and I asked him to share his impressions of the event.

Kayser: “We went to seminars the first day at that Cattlemen’s College and that was well worth the extra $160.”

Kayser shares the topics on most attendees’ minds.

Kayser: “Everything is about the drought -- most of what you hear. The primary thing is talking about the cattle numbers down and how the drought is affecting everybody.”

He shared there were outstanding speakers at the sessions as well.

Kayser: “We went to the general session had the Tuohys -- which is that couple that adopted that boy from the movie the Blind Slide and he played in the Super Bowl. They were the primary speakers at the end. I thought they probably wouldn’t be relevant but they did an excellent, excellent job.”

Of course with snow on the ground here, I had to ask about the weather.

Kayser: “They said they were in a cold front when we got here and I think it got down to 47 degrees at night. And now it is about 79 degrees every day or 80.”

He added that he was really impressed with both the convention and the trade show and said he would encourage other ranchers to attend in the future.
