Ag Day Essay Contest

Ag Day Essay Contest

Welcome to Open Range, I’m KayDee Gilkey. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. Ag Day is coming up on March 19th but the Ag Day essay contest deadline is this Friday, February 1st. Annette Degnan, Marketing and Communications Director for CHS talks about the essay contest.

DEGNAN: The Agriculture Council of America is asking all ninth to twelfth grade students to submit an original 450-word essay or a 2-minute video essay talking about the importance of agriculture around the theme, “American Agriculture: Nourishing Opportunities.”

I tend to be a literalist so Degnan clarifies that it can be give or take a few words.

DEGNAN: We’re trying to encourage them to really collect their thoughts into a complete package. So what the video and essay contest do is really provide an engaging platform for their voices, their vision and most importantly I think, for their dreams to be shared with a broader audience.

She says the video format has been very popular.

DEGNAN: It’s a YouTube world we live in. Video is a very popular form of expression for many people and certainly the younger people and we thought why not give them a chance to use a different format than a traditional written essay.
