4-H

4-H

Welcome to Open Range, I’m KayDee Gilkey. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks KayDee. 4-H is program for not only farm kids but really just about any kids. Kim Brackett, author of the blog Beef Matters, talks about her kids and 4-H.

BRACKETT: Well my two oldest kids are old enough for 4-H and they take steer projects each year so we’re just in the swing of things, getting started. We’re selecting our steers and deciding which ones will be the best for the boys this year.

4-H can really help teach young people responsibility.

BRACKETT: My husband and I really appreciate the responsibility that it teaches our boys. They help in the selection of the steers and from then on it the responsibility to feed those steers every morning and every night and along the way we weigh them, we halter break them and break them to lead and those are all really important skills for my boys to learn and again it’s the responsibility that they’re responsible for caring for those steers every day.

And of course the program is not just for farm kids.

BRACKETT: Some people don’t realize that 4-H is as all encompassing as it is. It has these livestock projects but it also has a myriad of projects from cooking and sewing to rocket building. My boys did rocket building last year and they might have enjoyed that more than steers if you asked them.

Check out Kim’s blog at www.beefmatters.com. I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m KayDee Gilkey.
