11-15 FB NW Winter
Long term winter weather outlook for the Northwest. I am David Sparks...Bryce Anderson is DTN's ag meteorologist and market analyst. Not only is Bryce a meteorologist but what is particularly important is that he started his life as a farmer. I recently chatted with him and he had a long-term take on this coming winters weather for Idaho. “One feature that we’re looking for for the Northwest, this is where things may change a little bit this late fall and winter depending on the Pacific ocean acts is right now, the Pacific Northwest part of the country including Idaho, including Eastern Oregon, including Washington state, drought is expected to develop and of course we look at the rainfall totals for the past 60 days and it’s been very light, almost nonexistent. Right now, assuming that El Nino would be a part of the big picture going into the winter, effects one of the El Niño effects is a drier pattern with the Northwestern part of the country. If the Pacific decides to have some La Nina type characteristics where the jet stream pattern gets truncated and switched around a little bit, we could see some more stormy weather work into the Northwest. That is one of the things I’m going to be watching very closely over the next couple of months. 2 years ago we had a pretty strong La Nina going on and we know what happened.
