10-26 SS Rifle Choice

10-26 SS Rifle Choice

Choosing the proper rifle for hunting deer. That’s the question of the day and we will ask an expert next.

It’s funny how it is an Internet world. I told you in the past that when I was a kid I  hunted white tail  with a Winchester 30-30 and no scope. That rifle worked, and it was a gift from a hunting buddy. But when it comes to choosing either your 1st rifle or the best rifle, if you don’t get the information from a friend or someone down at your sporting goods store you can turn to the Internet. If you Google choosing the best deer rifle and unimaginable number of websites come up. Example: foremosthunting.com,   hungry-for-hunting.com, YouTube, howcast.com, the list is endless. Just for fun I called up retired fish and game official who’s been on the show a lot, Ed Bangs who is a proficient big-game hunter. “I have always shot a .270.  It was my grandfather’s rifle, it’s nice flat shooting. For deer you do not need a big heavy rifle. It is better to get one you can shoot well. I prefer something a little bit smaller but .270, .243, .20-06, .25-06, smaller bullets for flat shooting and it depends on what kind of gear you are hunting. If you are in white tail, you want something that maybe gets through the brush I little bit better. Those high velocity bullets tend to deflect in brush. Mule deer tend to be open country, longer-range and white tails tend to be in thicker stuff so it depends on what kind of deer you are hunting. It also depends on how you like to hunt. Some guys like to spot and stalk and shoot across longer distances and they need a flatter shooting rifle and a .270 is certainly that and some guys like to hunt in thick brush with open sights and a 30-30. So it depends on what you want to do. But for deer, they are a smaller animal so you don’t need a heavy rifle.
