10-29 SS A Choice

The consummate question. You have the choice. Do I go chukar hunting or do I go pheasant hunting?... Or both. I’ll try and find an answer for you next.

My boss, Kelly Allen and his family went to Treo Ranches in Heppner, Oregon several months ago and did sporting clay competitions, a great dinners and had a ball. One of the things that Treo Ranches offers is pheasant and chukar hunting. I’ve done both and have thoughts on both but asked Treo owner Phil Carlson what his thoughts were: “I am trying to choose. Do I do pheasant or chukar? Give me a comparison between the 2 birds, the rigor that is involved. Okay. The chukar is a quicker bird and there are multiple chukars so the excitement and chaos is there. The pheasant can be more dependable, on a windy day they start running on you but they are more dependable. People love the color of the pheasant getting up. Larger target. You will take more meat home with a pheasant. but if you get quite a few chukars, the pounds of meat taken home higher about equivalent. The amount of effort put out for either one is still associated with the group. It depends on the terrain that we are going to hunt. Over your years of experience with people eating chukar versus eating pheasant, would you say that one bird is more tasty than the other? No. Everybody has their favorite. I hear it every day that I like chukar better than pheasant or I like pheasant better than chukar.
