10-17 FB Wheat Crop
Wheat. The staff of life. But it is more than a nutritional staff given that Idaho depends so heavily on wheat in terms of its overall economy. So the question now that follows is how is the wheat crop at this point in the year? We’ve had such dour reports on crops all summer because of the drought, how is wheat?
We had a question about the healthfulness of wheat come up recently and I called executive director of the Idaho wheat commission, Blaine Jacobson. Blaine debunked any negative nutritional accusations. While I was on the phone, I asked Blaine not about the healthfulness of wheat, but the health of the wheat crop. Here he is. “How does the wheat harvest look? Our crop is a very good quality this year. Total privacy is pretty close to our 5 year average. Maybe just a smidgen below the five-year average but pretty close and a good highest overall. Northern Idaho was above average, southern Idaho is average and eastern Idaho, because of the dry farms, is below average. Despite all of that the quality is excellent.”
